About
CATS IN ZANZIBAR
On the tropical Island of Zanzibar there is a huge cat population which arrived here together with a variety of immigrants down through the centuries. That is the reason the cats poplulation is also very diverse, you will find cats of the Egyptian style next to European cats, some with an African wildcat heritage and a bushy squirrel-like tail, and some looking more like the tailless Manx cats.
Most of these cats live in the street! This is where Paka Clinic works.
WHAT WE DO AT PAKA CLINIC
At Paka Clinic we decided to ease the suffering of these animals. We sterilise the cat population to decrease their density and thereby increase their health. In addition all street cats receive free treatment when sick or injured.
OUR STORY
The founder of Paka Clinic, Eva Styner has lived for a long time on the island. She started to be disturbed by the suffering of the street cats she observed daily. So she acted.
Cats are domestic animals, they arrived on the island with humans and are not able to survive without them. The hunting instinct of Zanzibar’s cats is very limited. The only way they survive in the street is to eat leftovers. Animals all over the world do this, even India tigers. But food scraps are a bad diet for cats and this impacts their health.
Humans brought the cats and therefore are responsible for them. With feeding, without birth control the suffering of the cats increases as more kittens are produced. Birth control is absolutely necessary, to avoid sick and injured cats daily in the street – which is also not good for tourism. We get a lot of calls from tourists that see cats in a bad state and want us to take care of them.
CATS AND ISLAM
Our philosophy is to enable cats to have a good life in the street. The climate on the island is already good for this and the Muslim population, in general, likes cats, Mohammed was a big cat lover. Killing a cat is a very bad thing in Islam and will bring punishment.
OUR PET CLINICS
With our pet clinic and other services we have to generate at least a part of the costs that we need for our free street work. With Dr.Goodluck and Dr. Julita, three vet assistants and two caretakers staff, we do have an experienced team to help to look after pets when it’s sick or injured. We offer cat boarding and cat visa services. We also work closely with other organisations for adoption and other services.
